About Campbell River

Active Retiree Walks (Strolling)
( This series of walks are between 30 and 90 minutes.)
.

Beach and Forest loop: Walk time 50 minutes. Mostly flat and usually dry.
Park your car at the Ken Ford Ramp. Walk North across the bridge then west off the island highway on Erickson Road . Turn left off Erickson at Martin road. Park at the end facing the entrance to Willow Creek conservation area. This is an alternate parking place. for your car. Enter the trail and walk south. If you are there before 9 a.m. you will hear many birds in song. Take a short detour to the left to cross over the bridge rather than wading the shallows at Willow Creek.. Keep walking south till you emerge at the corner of Twillingate and Willow Creek Road. Walk down Twillingate to the highway where you can join the sea walk back to the Ken Ford ramp.

Lower River Trail: 30-40 minutes. Flat.
Cross the new Campbell River bridge and take the first right into the parking lot. Walk back along the Windsor Mill Sales fence line till you come to the river. Cross over the wooden bridge and turn left . Follow the trail downstream as far as you care to go. It's a great place to photograph wildflowers, particularly in the spring, so take your camera. Find a quiet spot and listen to the moving water for a few moments.

The Millennium Trail and Elk Falls/Moose Falls Loop: About 1 1/2 to 2 hours Flat and Uphill grades good graveled trail
Park at the John Hart Power Station, cross the river at the powerhouse and go up the hill. At the top, take the trail to the left. The trail carries on uphill then levels out for a ways. You will cross a swampy area covered in salmonberry and devil's club. The trail carries on uphill until you reach the Elk Falls parking lot. At this time one can turn around and go back down, but the prize for taking the uphill walk is to carry on down to Elk Falls and enjoy the beauty of the Falls. Backtrack up the trail until you see a trail leading off to the right. This will take you to a viewpoint where Moose Falls can be observed. Carry on and the trail goes uphill for a short distance and brings you to the Elk Falls Picnic Area. The trail goes to the left and leads you back toward Elk Falls. Take the right fork in the trail and you will return to the original parking lot and the trail goes back down to the powerhouse. A beautiful hike on a not too warm day. Jim McDougall
