Weather -

• If you dream of having the opportunity to golf all year round, then living in the prairie provinces wouldn't be very practical.
• If, in the middle of winter, you are looking out at a 5-foot snowbank and you would rather be walking the beach, then you are in the wrong location!
• If you plan to remain in Canada you would likely narrow your search to British Columbia - the lower mainland or Vancouver Island.
  Ratings and Comparisons

Medical Facilities -

• It's important to have good access to a hospital, clinic and other medical facilities.
• Is a major treatment hospital/facility within driving distance?
• Are physicians/dentists in the location of your choice taking new patients?
• Is there an extended care facility nearby?

Airport -

• Sometimes it's just nice to get away - or have the grandchildren come to visit you. Sometimes emergencies might demand that you be somewhere in a hurry.
• In any case it's ideal to be within an hour or so drive to an airport that accommodates commercial flights.

Amenities -

• Shopping is a part of life. Ideally you will find shops to satisfy your needs - grocery stores, hardware, clothing, etc.
• Restaurants also play a role in our lives these days and it's nice to have a choice from which to choose!

Town's Infrastructure -

• This is important since the way in which a town is run ultimately says so much about the quality of life of the residents!
• What is the traffic pattern?
• How was the road system planned? Wide roads or narrow?
• Is there adequate police coverage?
• What about ambulance and fire protection?
• Is the town on a sewer system or septic?
• What about the town's water supply?
• Is the mayor approachable if you have questions?
• Does the town have industry/business to support it?
• What are the property taxes for residences?

Continuing Education -

• Okay, you are retiring ... you are not "dropping out" of life. It's important to know that you can take evening classes if you want! Maybe you've always wanted to learn to belly dance or get on the internet - now that you're retired you might find the spare time to do just that!
• Are evening courses (academic and/or general interest) offered?
• Are Eldercollege programs offered?

Cultural -

• Again, you're retiring ... you're not dropping off the planet.
• Museums, art galleries, live theatre, concerts, dance .... are these available in your dream location?
