Choosing Campbell River
(cont'd)

Volunteer Opportunities -

  • Volunteers contribute so much to their communities while learning and making new friends at the same time.
  • Make inquiries about the possibilities in your new hometown! Volunteering is very personally rewarding and it enhances life in the community!

Recreational Facilities -

  • As a new retiree you will want to get fit - or stay fit - so that you can enjoy an active and rewarding life!
  • You might join a gym, take swimming lessons, ride a bike, take up hiking or walk your dog along peaceful, scenic trails.
  • If the game of curling, for example, has been a special part of your life you should find out if the town you are considering has a curling rink!

Place of Worship -

  • If attending church services has been a part of your life you will want ensure that does not change.
  • Is there a church of your faith in the location you are considering?

Getting Around -

  • As we get older it might be easier to get around by public transit rather than car.
  • How good is the bus service?
  • Bus routes, schedules and fares could be important to your decision!
  • Is "Handi-Dart" available?

Retirement Homes -

  • Yes, the years pass and sometime in the future you might decide to move into a "retirement home".
  • As the baby boomers reach retirement age it is very likely retirement homes will be built in most communities - but, again, this is something to consider when making your choice.

Welcoming -

  • If you have the opportunity to visit your prospective new home (and you really should make the effort!) spend time wandering around, observing.
  • Take a vacation to scout the situation out.
  • Are store employees friendly?
  • Do they go out of their way to assist you?
  • Do people seem open and friendly or do you get the sense that they a closed and 'cliquey'?

Retirees -

  • You are looking forward to your retirement as a new adventure! And you hope there are others in the same boat as you.
  • Does the town you're considering have a fairly large number of retirees?
  • Are there "Seniors" organizations?
  • Are there opportunities for you to get involved?
  • Are retirees seen as valuable assets to the community as a whole? (This is such a healthy outlook for everyone involved!)

Obtain Information About Prospective Communities

  • You can do this through the internet or by writing the various Chambers of Commerce to request information about the communities in question.
  • Ask for copies of their local newspapers!
  • Visit the community, become familiar with it.
  • Talk to people! Ask questions!
