Why Retire Here

Climate

"The Climate" is one of the first responses from new Retiree's when asked why they retired in Campbell River. Climate can be measured in annual inches of rain, hours of sunshine or the number of frost free days however, most retirees are really interested in how climate will affect their lifestyle. The mild climate in Campbell River is a major contributor to a wide range of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year round. For example, in February, March and April it's quite possible to enjoy the excellent skiing on Mount Washington less than an hour away and then play a round of golf at one of the three first class local golf courses the same day.

Of course Campbell River is world famous for fishing, which due to our climate, is a year round activity as well.

Many Campbell River retirees enjoy the gardening activities our mild climate permits. January brings with it snowdrops, in February crocuses appear and March follows up with daffodils, tulips and a host of other bulbs.

April finds many back yard gardeners preparing soil for spring planting. It's possible to enjoy some form of gardening all year round but late October or early November usually produces an evening or two of frost to end a profusion of summer blossoms.

The influence of the Pacific Ocean is strong, with the resulting winters being mild and summer temperatures average 3-6 degrees C. cooler than those of the hot Southern Interior. Campbell River occasionally passes a winter without snow but, when it does come, snow very rarely lasts a week. A common annual weather pattern will be 1-3 snowfalls, each of which lasts 1-3 days, to be washed away in the rain. The local expression about rain is, "we don't shovel it". The rain keeps our huge water reservoir full of clean soft water in quantities well above our needs.

An aspect of climate and outdoor activities that is often forgotten is related to insect life, especially in spring and summer months. Campbell River is relatively free of annoying insects, which is likely due in part to the proximity to salt water and fresh ocean breezes. Whatever the reason for their near absence, you can be sure of enjoying the great outdoors any time of year without being "bugged".

One of the best ways to find out about the climate in Campbell River is to ask those who live here, or come for a visit to see for yourself. Please check through some of the retiree stories for an email address to contact a local retiree (s) directly. Before you leave this page check out this week's weather from Enviornment Canada. You can also view the weather live from web cam.
